I have knitted for most of my life, starting whilst at infants’ school, and owned a wool shop for 17 years (in fact two shops for a couple of years).
Now retired and with one of my daughters sheep farming in New Zealand … I am beginning to hand spin my own yarn from the ample supply of fleece that has become readily available - despite the fact that I still have a loft full of yarn.
During the wool shop years whilst encouraging customers to ‘follow the pattern to get the best results’ . .. I never followed a pattern for my own knitting. I like to combine bits from various patterns and my own ideas to create unique garments and, with a whole shop to choose from, loved mixing yarns. I also derived great pleasure from knitting up the oddments into something special.
Since joining the Guild of Long Draw Spinners, I have been encouraged to commit my patterns to paper, and some of these are available from the Guild. (more on this later when I have fathomed uploading pictures!!)
As well as being a founder member (and now Secretary) of the Guild of Long Draw Spinners, I am also a member of the Mercury Bay Woolgroup which is in New Zealand where I spend my UK winters. The inspiration gained from both groups is enormous.
