Minutes of Meeting held at Stoke Albany Village Hall
On Saturday 2nd August 2008

  • Present: PA (Chair and minutes), LM (Treasurer), RW, CR, VandDB, JB with SB (aged 3), JJ, HW (Visitor)
  • Apologies: NA, JV, RM, AW, SF, EH
  • Members and visitors were welcomed. JJ was thanked for the impressive selection of organic fleece from the Wildlife Trust which she has faciliated. Fleece are £6.00 plus postage, and available direct from Janet.
  • Minutes of the last meeting: Minutes of the AGM have been circulated to all members - including those not on the internet - by NA.
  • Matters arising: Discussion took place regarding communications, planning and benefits of membership during the first year. It was agreed that these were all areas for improvement during the coming year.
  • 1. Programme: 2008 programme is completed. It was agreed to adopt a rolling 3 monthly programme of Members day(Inspiration Day format), Visit, and Workshop starting January 09 the final details to be agreed between PA, LM and NA. The detailed programme is to be circulated asap.
  • 2. Communications: A newsletter is to be published twice yearly, in July (after Woolfest) and January each year.
  • 3. Membership Cards: to be produced asap together with A6 or A7 size diary of events for the coming year. Both LM and JJ have laminators available to the guild.
  • Finance: A reminder is to be sent to members who have not renewed their subscriptions together with details of the new programme and newsletter as soon as these are available.
  • Events:
  • 1. Celebration of Spinning 1st November meeting: This is take place at the November meeting (Saturday 1st, All Saints Day) in recognition of St Catherine's Day on 25th November. The programme will include tuition and displays of longdraw spinning on the great wheel, dropspindle and various modern wheels, a slide show and talk on aspects of the history of spinning. A fascimile edition of the Luttrell Psalter, circa 1328 from which the Guild logo is adapted will be on display together with books on Spinning wheel research and an exhibition of work.
  • 2. Visit to Framlingham: PA is to speak to SS re possible visit to her dying workshop early next year. JB, who lives in the area, has volunteered to explore other opportunites of interest for those who wish to make an extended visit.
  • Website: JB is to speak to Bruce in Phoenix asap re the Learn to Longdraw video (PA to facilitate). JB will circulate ideas for content to members and progress at the next meeting. The organic fleece are to be advertised on the site - JJ to liaise with Bruce about this. Website communication is still unsatisfactory - JB to address.
  • Any Other business:
  • 1. The 'Order of the Apron': the Guild's first 'Apron' was presented to VB in recognition of her Academic services to longdraw spinning.
  • 2. Journal of WSD: Details were circulated as requested at the AGM. It was agreed to take out one subscription for the Guild, and PA, and RW will take private subscriptions through the guild.
  • Date and time of next meeting:
    Saturday 6th September, Stoke Albany Village Hall, LE16 8PL 10am - 4.00pm Cost: £5.00. Programme will include a demonstration of needle felting by SF - materials and equipment will be available for anyone to have a go. Coffee and tea is provided.
