PROGRAMME 2013: theme is ‘Getting the techniques right!’

5th January - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*

2nd February - GOLDS “Great Wheel Welcome” - Our specially commissioned Great Wheel made for us by David Bryant is our star attraction this month. Members and a few specially invited guests will help us celebrate the Great Wheel’s arrival. Now that GOLDS have a great wheel in residence, we would like all our members to have the opportunity to develop Long Draw spinning and demonstration skills on the Great Wheel. Members please being own Great Wheel if you have one. This meeting will also include a workshop on the making of the perfect rolag. Please bring your hand carders.

2nd March - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*
(TBC) plus an advice clinic on improving your Long Draw Spinning technique - making thicker yarns and spinning with short fibres with GOLDS’s founder Chair Pam Austin.

6th April - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*
A morning visit to Eve Newcombe-Baker’s Zwartbles and Jacobs lambs at, “Windy Ridge”farm, Desborough Road, Harrington, Northants. Please bring sandwiches or cake to have a Eve’s and then we will go back to Stole Albany for a spin in.

13th April - GOLDS GRAND DAY OUT: The Huguenots of Spitafields, London
We will journey by train from local stations and meet up in London to visit Spitafields (see information below).

The Huguenots of Spitafields; Celebrating their Contribution and talents with a programme of events including Saturday 13th April “The Big Weave at Spitafields Market” 10am-5pm.It will have a variety of stalls –all with links to the Huguenots’ legacy and live entertainment in the performance area. “Stitches in Time”, a participatory textiles arts organisation, will be running a weaving workshop throughout the day when visitors will be able to take part in making textiles inspired by the Huguenot weavers.(For ticket information, programme changes and updates visit www.hugeuenotsofspitafields.org)

We are also planning a late afternoon visit to The London Cloth Company who use reclaimed and restored traditional looms to weave customer commissions (TBC).

4th May - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*
(TBC) with an afternoon Advice clinic on
“How to talk Knitters Speak” – a clinic to help you design and convert patterns for your yarns, with FAQs for spinners. Bring along your own project requirements and patterns. Linzi Mason from “The Alpaca Spinner”

25th-27th May - GOLDS Demonstration Stand:
Whitsun Bank Holiday Sheep Shearing displays and demonstrations at West Lodge Farm Park, Back Lane, Desborough, Northants, NN14 2SH.Volunteer GOLDS members are needed to help with Long Draw Spinning demonstrations, talking to people on the stand and a possible” Back to Back” challenge.

1st June - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*

28th-29th June - Woolfest
Mitchell’s Lakeland Livestock Centre, Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 OQQ Friday 10 – 6pm, Saturday 10 – 5pm, £8 per day

6th July - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*

27th–28th July - GOLDS Demonstration Stand:
Fibre East – Redborne Community College (PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATES AND VENUE). Volunteer GOLDS members are needed to help with Long Draw Spinning demonstrations, talking to people on the stand and a possible” Back to Back” challenge.

10th August - GOLDS (3rd) Fleece Sale and Second Hand Bring and Buy

Wilbarston Village Hall from 10.30- 4pm.

The aim of this sale is to help our members that own sheep find a local market for their wool. Unwanted spinning/wool related equipment/ second hand stall will be running this year. There will be an inspection table to help select and identify fleeces will be labelled with name, address and sheep details to make them completely traceable and a contact for further demand!
Non-members can apply to GOLDS for permission to sell their fleeces. Registration forms will be available from GOLDS Chair (chair@longdrawspinners.org). All Fleece sellers must registered by 1st July.

The GOLDS Great Wheel will be available for a different spinning experience.

7th September - GOLDS Annual General Meeting at 11a.m.

5th October - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*
with ‘The Science of Plying’ workshop. Bring any singles yarns you would like to use for practising your plying.

2nd November - GOLDS Celebration of Spinning
A Great Wheel Day: with a range of member’s Wheels demonstrated and in the afternoon a ‘Making Funky Yarns’ workshop (TBC).

7th December - Long Draw Spinning-Inspiration Day*
Christmas Meeting

*Long Draw Spinning –Inspiration Days: these meetings are treasured by our members. We used these meetings as an opportunity to encourage and support Long Draw spinning, to seek advice, share experiences and network with like minded spinners. A typical day can include:
• a talking table where you can show and tell us about your latest projects
• an advice clinic, a talk / workshop on a pre-agreed topic,
• a shared lunch
• a spin – in.
