When knitting Aran pattern you are re-creating the hard life of the crofters who lived on the Aran Isles off the west coast of Ireland. The stitches are symbols which represent the following:

Honeycombe – the busy bee
Diagonals – steep paths from cliff to sea
Moss – peat or moss
Cables – fishermen’s ropes
Trellis – small fields encompassed by low stone walls
Blackberry – The Holy Trinity of Three in One

Does anyone know any more?
